Last week, I introduced a new series called Rappers’ Favorite Watches where I analyze the lyrics of hip-hop artists to see which watch brands they rap about the most. I kicked off the first installment with JAY Z and Kanye West. This week, let’s take a look at Miami-native Rick Ross. With as many references to luxury watch brands as Ricky Rozay has in his lyrics, you’d think he was getting paid for product placement. While JAY Z gets most of the credit for being rap’s horology connoisseur, Rick Ross boasts the most diverse and luxurious taste in the game. He dives the furthest into haute horology, making Audemars Piguet seem like table stakes when he casually drops names like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. He can’t correctly pronounce either of those brands, but that’s okay because, out of 27 total watch references, 13 of them prove he’s a Rolex man.
Listening to Rick Ross on Spotify one day, I had the idea to start this series. Line after line, it seemed the guy was always rapping about watches, and when I heard him say “Vacheron” (well, he pronounced it like “Vackeron”), I knew there had to be some brand references more interesting than Rolex and Audemars lurking in hip-hop. I admire Ricky’s education on the brand universe. If any emcee is likely to drop A. Lange & Sohne in an album, it’s going to be Ross, but I’m not sure I want to be around to hear him butcher the pronunciation.
