Christoper Ward is gearing up to release several new models this year, and the Harrison Big Day-Date in particular caught our eye. The brand’s Harrison lineup is unlike anything that the other brands selling over the Internet are doing. Each watch in the Harrison line features a complication engineered by the master watchmaker behind Christopher Ward, Johannes Jahnke, and the result is usually an attractive and exclusive product for an unbeatable price. New to the Harrison line this year is the Big Day-Date.
The name of the watch says it all, but there’s more appeal to the watch than a large day-date at 3 o’clock. A smooth white dial is the backdrop for Ward’s classy and minimalist design. Thin black hands, which taper subtly at both ends and proudly and tastefully extend past the center pinion, contrast with the white dial and to yield one of the most legible designs I’ve seen in years. Of course, the day-date is big and easy to read, but occupies less real estate than you’d expect given that the case is boldly sized at 43mm. That’s a pretty hefty size for a dress watch, and I worry that with such a thin bezel this watch is going to appear oversized on the wrist; however, with a thickness a hair over 12mm, I’d feel confident about this one sliding underneath any shirt cuff. A sapphire crystal can be found on both the front and back of the case.
An ETA 2836-2 is behind the transparent case back. This is the same movement used in the Tissot Heritage Visodate 1957 that we reviewed. In fact, the designs are rather similar save the oversized case of the Christopher Ward and its customized date wheel, which features a stronger serif font. From what I can tell, this is the primary modification of the ETA movement, but let us know if you do have any more information as to specifics of the movement modification.
The Big Day-Date comes on either a 22mm black or brown alligator strap with a deployment buckle. The watch will retail for $899 and ship at the end of March. Relative to say, the Tissot Heritage Visodate, it’s rough to say if this price is right, but knowing Christopher Ward, the fit and finish will be spectacular and they’ll back it up with their unparalleled 60-60 guarantee. christopherward-usa.com
